We are delighted to announce the imminent completion of Phase 1 of the University of Nottingham Flood Mitigation and Car Park Regeneration Project. This multi-disciplinary initiative has involved extensive remedial work to the main visitor’s car park, as well as flood mitigation efforts for the George Green Library, which flooded during an extreme weather event.

The car park renovation encompassed several essential tasks, including the planning and replacement of the existing wearing course. We have also introduced a new surface drainage system, strategically placed planter areas, and a comprehensive reshaping of the perimeter.

Central to Phase 1 was the installation of upstream hydroplanters within the car park. These hydroplanters are connected via 110mm pipework, which has been laid below Birco road gullies at intermittent intervals, and integrated into a newly established surface water sewer system.

To manage the drainage efficiently, the car park's runoff water is directed through a 100mm angular stone filter, effectively dispersing and controlling the flow rate. The water is then directed to an infiltration basin soakaway through a dual-feed drainage system, facilitated by an Althon H3C 1.5m headwall. This basin retains the water, allowing it to percolate into attenuation tanks, while an additional drainage pipe system feeds directly into cellular soakaway attenuation tanks. Furthermore, an overflow system has been implemented to connect the basin with the existing drainage network, ensuring optimal drainage management.

In conjunction with these essential infrastructure improvements, the main car park area has undergone resurfacing with bituminous macadam. The finishing touch comprises fresh thermoplastic car park line markings, delineating 169 car parking bays, 10 disabled bays, and efficient traffic flow directions for the convenience of all users.

Looking ahead, Phase 2 of the project is already underway. This stage will involve the excavation and construction of a new accessible pedestrian ramp, including the casting of foundations, a brick retaining wall, access steps, and guard rail. Moreover, we will upgrade the existing drainage system, introduce new paving and kerbing, and resurface the library and car park areas.

The scheme will be finished with durable planting that serves as a protective screen against soil washout from the bank.

We are excited to witness the progress of this transformative project, which will not only enhance the University of Nottingham's infrastructure and provide a 1 in 100yrs + 40% flood mitigation but also contribute to the safety and convenience of all those who utilise the car park and the George Green Library.

Stay tuned for further updates as we continue to move forward with Phase 2 and bring this ambitious project to fruition.
