Members of the National Highways North East Yorkshire Social Value Working Group came together to volunteer for St Luke's hospice in Sheffield's. Jointline's Elaine Lawton and Llyanna Caswell, from the Bradford depot, joined staff from Jacobs, J McCann, Costain, Winvic, Crown Highways and Mway Comms to spend a day sorting and processing donations, creating £2,800 for patient care.

Elaine said: “St Luke’s Hospice is a very well-known charity in Sheffield for end-of-life care, for the terminally ill. The Managers and volunteers of this organisation are truly amazing, the hard work and dedication of these people is second to none. It was a great privilege to have contributed in helping towards such a great cause”

St Luke's receives a significant amount of funding from the government in order to provide end of life care for terminally ill patients. However, this funding is only 25% of what it actually costs to provide this care. As a result, the charity relies heavily on donations and fundraiser days/charity events to make up the other 75% of their funding.

Llyanna added: “This particular volunteering day hit home for me which was very endearing to be a part of, knowing that you was the most minute part of something that contributed massively to making sure others’ lives were filled with so much joy, it was a day I think made me very humble.”

The event was part of the National Highways Community Programme for supply chain partners on the SDF Framework and aims to provide opportunities for contractors to engage and work with local communities to help improve their quality of life.
