There was a lot of 'high vis' at Foxglove Covert Nature Reserve last week as staff from the National Highways Community were welcomed to spend a day carrying out voluntary conservation work!

Jointline's Elaine Lawton and Llyanna Caswell, from the Bradford depot, joined staff from Jacobs, Kier, Costain, Winvic,  Concrete Repairs Limited and Mway Comms. After a 'brew and biscuits' and an introduction they set to work in the coppice block using hand tools to cut the Willow to ground level. Although it looks drastic, it will all grow back next year and wildflowers will benefit from the extra light reaching the ground.

Working in pairs, the team cut a large amount in no time at all. Brash was piled up and will be turned into woodchip to be used around the nature reserve. After a curry lunch the team enjoyed a guided walk to learn more about habitat management. Everyone who attended is looking forward to returning next summer to see the results of their hard work.

This event was part of the National Highways Community Programme for supply chain partners on the SDF Framework and aims to provide opportunities for contractors to engage and work with local communities to help improve their quality of life.

Foxglove Covert is a small nature reserve situated behind Cambrai Lines at the British Army Catterick Garrison. The site is managed in such a way as to retain and enhance the varied habitats but also to allow the local community to enjoy and appreciate it, with a strong emphasis on education at all levels.  It has a reputation as a rich wildlife habitat and for excellence in bird ringing.
