High Speed Circuit Line Marking

Introduction:

At an internationally renowned proving ground test facility, Jointline encountered a pressing challenge when the need for refreshing the line markings around an automotive proving ground, which featured three bends banked up to 33° with radiuses of up to 216 meters, presented itself. The primary objective was twofold: to ensure the utmost safety of the drivers using the track and to achieve line markings of the highest quality.

The Challenge:

A site visit to the high-speed circuit confirmed the unique set of challenges facing the team. The circuit's steep banking angles and low vehicle speeds rendered traditional line-marking vehicles impractical. The need for an innovative solution became evident.

The complexity of this endeavour was compounded by the requirement for 1 pack epoxy paint. Traditional thermoplastic, often used for such applications, was unsuitable due to its inherent limitations. Notably, thermoplastic leaves a raised finish on the surface, which can prove detrimental to both vehicle performance and safety. Additionally, the removal of thermoplastic markings typically necessitates the use of a thermic lance, a process that can potentially damage the underlying track surface. Hence, the selection of 1 pack epoxy paint was a pivotal decision to ensure both safety and the long-term integrity of the track.

In response to this challenge, the engineering team embarked on a pioneering project. They modified a compact Graco LineLazer machine, equipping it with an extendable paint gun arm. This adjustable arm allowed the paint machine to operate effectively on the flat sections of the track, mitigating concerns of paint starvation or oil starvation in the compressor, which could have arisen from the unusual track angles.

The Results:

The tangible results of this project were nothing short of remarkable. The lines were completed with precision, and their quality exceeded expectations. The use of 1 pack epoxy paint not only met safety specifications but also ensured a smooth, flat surface, which is critical for high-speed circuit performance.

The execution of this project exemplified precision and quality. The use of 1 pack epoxy paint, chosen specifically for its capacity to deliver a smooth, flat surface finish, was a testament to the commitment to quality work. The project adhered meticulously to safety specifications, ensuring that drivers utilising the circuit would experience the highest level of safety and performance. The project was finished within the scheduled timeframe to ensure the proving ground could return to operations.

The team's meticulous attention to detail and innovative approach to modifying the lining machine demonstrated a dedication to problem-solving and excellence. It showcased their ability to adapt to unique challenges within the line-marking sector.
