Efficient Revitalisation of Leeds and Liverpool Canal Towpath by Jointline’s Specialist Surfacing Division

Introduction

Jointline's Specialist Surfacing Division completed an ambitious project on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in Wigan. The project involved the revitalisation of a 12,000 square metre towpath, extending over 6 kilometres and measuring 2 metres in width. This extensive route was enhanced with a 6mm double washed Trent pea gravel, set in a Colas Surfix 80s binder, to replace the previous muddy path and provide a more durable and visually appealing surface for pedestrians and cyclists alike.

The Challenge

The execution of this project presented a series of significant challenges, not least because of the towpath's location and the logistical complexities involved. Due to weight restrictions on the towpath, the project required the use of specialised plant and equipment. This included a boiler tanker to heat the binders, a 1-tonne dumper equipped with a sprayer chipper facility, and mechanical hand sprayers. Furthermore, the Jointline team had to employ a floating pontoon and hoppers for the transportation of materials and plant via the canal, adding another layer of complexity to the operation.

Complicating matters further, a section of the canal was scheduled to be closed for a fishing competition, necessitating meticulous planning and scheduling to accommodate this event without disrupting the project timeline. Additionally, the high pedestrian and cycle traffic on the towpath posed a significant management challenge. Jointline addressed this by deploying operatives to marshal the public through the works area, thus avoiding total closure of the towpath and minimising disruption.

Weather conditions also played a critical role, with daily programme adjustments required to prevent surface damage or contamination of the water course in the event of rain. Careful management ensured that the project could proceed without significant delays or environmental impact.

The Results

The transformation of the towpath on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal stands as a testament to Jointline's expertise and innovative approach to surface engineering. The newly installed tar and chip surface not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the area but also significantly improves its accessibility and usability for the local community and businesses connected to the canal.

By overcoming the logistical and environmental challenges presented by this project, Jointline has delivered a durable and attractive towpath that blends seamlessly with the local surroundings. This newly refurbished route now serves as a fully accessible and scenic pathway for cyclists and pedestrians, enriching the local community and fostering a stronger connection with the canal's heritage and natural beauty.
