Highways Line Marking for Charterholme Residential Development

Introduction

Jointline recently delivered highways line marking works at Charterholme, a significant new residential development site in Lincoln. Appointed by Graham Civil Engineering as part of the Section 278 (S278) Works, the project involved the completion of white lining along a newly constructed access road connecting to Tritton Road. This early phase of infrastructure plays a critical role in enabling phased access to the wider site, which is earmarked for housing, education, retail, and community facilities.

The completed access road marks a key milestone for the Charterholme scheme and supports the local authority’s long-term plans for urban expansion. The Challenge

As part of the S278 agreement, the client required the construction and commissioning of a new access road to facilitate the safe entry and exit of vehicles from Tritton Road, a heavily trafficked arterial route in Lincoln. The challenge for Jointline was to complete the road marking works to a high standard of accuracy while adhering to tight scheduling and coordination with other construction activities onsite.

The road forms part of a larger infrastructure spine that will eventually connect to Skellingthorpe Road, creating a continuous transport corridor through the development. Therefore, all markings needed to align precisely with long-term traffic planning and future junction layouts. In addition, the works had to be completed with minimal disruption to the existing highway and surrounding residential areas.

The Solution

Jointline’s highways delivery team mobilised promptly to site, working closely with Graham Civil Engineering to ensure efficient phasing of the road marking works. The team applied thermoplastic white lines using industry-standard equipment and materials, ensuring maximum visibility, durability, and compliance with local authority specifications.

Particular attention was paid to the geometry and positioning of the markings to support both current traffic movements and the anticipated evolution of the road layout as further phases of the development come online. This included the accurate placement of centre lines, edge markings, and stop lines to facilitate safe vehicle movement through the new junctions and access points.

Clear lines of communication between all contractors ensured that works were completed within the agreed programme, avoiding any delays to the opening of the road. All activities were delivered in line with health and safety protocols and traffic management plans.
