Successful Reservoir Footpath Upgrade by Jointline Enhances Visitor Experience at Carsington Water

Jointline was commissioned by RPH Surfacing, under a subcontract from Bagnalls, to undertake a vital infrastructure project for the end client, Severn Trent Water. The project was centered around the improvement of pedestrian access at Carsington Water, the ninth largest reservoir in England. This prominent site was inaugurated by the late Queen Elizabeth II in May 1992, can store up to 7,800 million gallons of water and reaches depths equivalent to the height of seven double-decker buses. The objective was to enhance the resin-bonded footpaths to ensure safety and aesthetic appeal for the numerous visitors the reservoir attracts.

The Challenge

The primary challenges faced during this project stemmed from the need to balance efficient project execution with minimal disruption to public access. Firstly, the project required meticulous liaison with the client to effectively program and organise the work while ensuring pedestrian traffic was diverted appropriately around the work areas. Secondly, the project's scheduling was significantly constrained by the weather, necessitating flexible and adaptive work strategies to manage unpredictable conditions. Lastly, there was acute pressure to complete the project ahead of the upcoming bank holiday, which required a scaling of resources and an increased workforce to adhere to the tight deadline.

The Results

Despite the challenges, the project was completed successfully and on schedule, demonstrating Jointline's capability to manage and execute complex civil engineering projects under stringent conditions. The footpaths were resurfaced using high-quality materials, specifically an epoxy resin dressed with 1-3mm Brittany Bronze aggregate, which not only ensured durability but also enhanced the visual appeal of the pathways. Strategic planning and effective management of resources enabled the continuation of public access to the reservoir with minimal interruption. This project exemplifies Jointline's commitment to delivering high-standard results while effectively managing client relations and logistical challenges.
