Hoarthorns Woodland Creation Gains New Forestry Access Infrastructure

Reinforced aggregate forestry road and drainage infrastructure completed for Forestry England at Hoarthorns Woodland in the Forest of Dean

Jointline has completed a civil engineering package for Forestry England’s Hoarthorns Woodland Creation project in the Forest of Dean, providing the access infrastructure needed to support more than 88 hectares of new woodland.

Known as Coronation Woods, the scheme forms part of Forestry England’s wider woodland creation programme and commemorates the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III. The completed works will support woodland establishment, long-term stewardship and future timber harvesting activities.

Jointline constructed approximately 1,012 metres of new forest road and upgraded 613 metres of existing farm track. The project also included a 42-metre stream crossing, new drainage infrastructure, culvert works, turning areas and localised repairs to existing access roads.

Variable ground conditions required a robust construction capable of supporting forestry vehicles throughout the year. Tensar SS30 geogrid reinforcement was installed beneath the new road, followed by compacted 80 mm and 40 mm graded aggregate layers to create a stable all-weather route.

Drainage was a key part of the scheme. Roadside ditches, grips and three new 450 mm culverts were installed to manage surface water, maintain natural drainage routes and reduce the risk of erosion or deterioration to the road structure.

The stream crossing was one of the most technically demanding elements of the project. Jointline extended an existing 1 m-diameter concrete culvert, raised the road above the existing farm track and constructed a reinforced crossing suitable for forestry traffic.

Biodegradable geotextile systems, marine-grade rock armour and timber-clad safety barriers were installed to improve resilience and protect the surrounding watercourse. Carefully sequenced works, controlled spoil management and downstream silt matting helped minimise environmental impact during construction.

The scheme was delivered close to historic earthworks linked to former quarrying and industrial activity. Exclusion zones, workforce briefings and controlled storage areas were used to protect these features, while public rights of way remained operational throughout the works.

The completed infrastructure gives Forestry England reliable access across the site for woodland establishment, maintenance and future harvesting. Geogrid reinforcement, engineered aggregate construction and comprehensive drainage measures will also help extend the life of the new roads and reduce ongoing maintenance requirements.
