Jointline | Safely marking the way ahead
Bradford City Metropolitan Council Road Markings Framework

Introduction

For nearly 30 years, Jointline has been the primary provider of road marking services for Bradford City Metropolitan Council under its Road Markings Framework. Covering an extensive network of 1,650 km highways across 37,000 hectares, Jointline has delivered exceptional service and innovative solutions, securing contract renewals through to June 2025 with an option extending to 2026. This case study explores the enduring partnership, challenges addressed, solutions implemented, and the significant results achieved.

The Challenge

Maintaining high-quality, safe, and compliant road markings across Bradford’s extensive and busy road network presented multiple challenges. These included managing high volumes of work with stringent safety standards and enhancing environmental sustainability. Additionally, keeping up with the rapid pace of digital transformation in project management and maintaining proactive community engagement were crucial for sustaining long-term success.

The Solution

Jointline tackled these challenges by deploying dedicated road marking crews and appointing an operations manager to ensure efficient coordination and communication. Innovations such as real-time job tracking, the use of environmentally friendly materials, and the introduction of Euro 6 compliant vehicles were key strategies. Regular face-to-face meetings with Bradford MDC and a strong focus on digital process optimisation further enabled effective project management.

The Results

The strategic approach resulted in consistently high-quality road markings, 100% compliance with regulatory standards, and enhanced road safety across Bradford. The introduction of low VOC thermoplastic materials and upgrading the fleet to Euro 6 standards significantly reduced environmental impact, achieving an 87.5% waste recycling rate. The partnership also fostered local employment, provided valuable work placements, and supported community initiatives like tree planting, which offset 140 tonnes of carbon annually. This robust collaboration between Jointline and Bradford MDC exemplifies a successful blend of technical excellence, sustainability, and community value, setting a benchmark for future contracts in the highways sector.
