Jointline Completes Helipad Markings on the Isle of Mull

The Challenge

The Isle of Mull faced a significant logistical challenge in providing timely emergency medical evacuations. Before the establishment of the Wilson-Thomson Helipad at Mull and Iona Community Hospital, medical evacuations required a 45-minute ferry journey from Oban or a 15-minute road transfer to Glenforsa airstrip, delaying critical care. The need for a purpose-built helipad directly adjacent to the hospital was paramount to ensuring that patients could receive specialist treatment within the 'Golden Hour', a critical period that dramatically impacts patient outcomes. The project required precise and durable line marking, but adverse weather conditions on the Isle of Mull further complicated the task, posing a serious challenge to the timely completion of the helipad.

The Solution

Jointline was tasked with the intricate line marking of the Wilson-Thomson Helipad, a crucial component of the new facility that enables safe landings for Scottish Air Ambulance and larger HM Coastguard helicopters. Despite facing significant weather-related challenges, including limited windows of favourable conditions, our team demonstrated remarkable determination and efficiency. Over two days, the crew seized three brief opportunities to carry out the line marking with precision, ensuring the helipad met the stringent safety and operational standards required for medical evacuations. The entire project was made possible by a £400,000 donation from the HELP Appeal, which funded the construction and marking of the helipad.

The Benefits

The successful completion of the Wilson-Thomson Helipad has revolutionised emergency medical services on the Isle of Mull. By eliminating the need for land ambulance transfers and ferry journeys, the helipad allows for direct and rapid air access to Mull and Iona Community Hospital. This improvement is critical for delivering timely medical care, especially within the 'Golden Hour', thereby enhancing patient outcomes and saving lives. The helipad stands as a testament to the community’s resilience and the impact of collaborative efforts. It not only honours the legacy of John Wilson and Dr. Bill Thomson but also underscores Jointline's commitment to overcoming challenges and improving healthcare infrastructure in remote areas.
