Jointline was commissioned by Derbyshire Dales District Council to undertake a vital resurfacing project for the pathways within Hall Leys Park, situated in the heart of Matlock. This initiative was aimed at enhancing the accessibility, safety, and visual appeal of the park, a key community asset that features multiple amenities, including a café, bowling green, children's play area, and a multi-use games court. The requirement to keep all these facilities accessible throughout the project added complexity to the execution strategy.
The project's primary challenge was executing significant resurfacing works in a bustling public park without disrupting the flow of pedestrian and vehicle traffic and maintaining full accessibility to the park's amenities. The solution involved creating phased work zones, which allowed the park's various facilities to remain operational throughout the construction period. Jointline implemented strict safety measures, including the use of temporary barriers and clear signage to guide visitors safely around the construction zones. Managing logistics was particularly complex due to limited access points, necessitating precise scheduling of material deliveries during off-peak hours to a designated compound within the park. Additionally, the project team had to contend with variable weather conditions, which posed risks to the timely application of materials, necessitating flexible and responsive scheduling to take advantage of favourable weather.
Jointline successfully overcame these logistical and environmental challenges, completing the project to the council’s high standards. The pathways were resurfaced with a high-quality, UV-stabilised, odourless polyurethane resin, which provides slip resistance. This material choice not only improved the pathways' durability and safety but also enhanced their aesthetic, with colour-differentiated aggregates delineating specific zones for cycling and walking, thereby supporting the council's multi-use accessibility goals.
The technical execution included meticulous preparation of the existing surfaces, ensuring a clean and dry base for the resin application. This preparation was critical to achieving a durable bond and maintaining the integrity of the new surface. The project also incorporated environmental considerations, such as optimising material deliveries to reduce carbon emissions and managing public movements to ensure minimal disruption to park users.
