Enhancing Cycle Safety

Introduction
Jointline recently completed the refurbishment of a well-used cycle path in Sheffield, delivered in partnership with Amey under the Streets Ahead contract. The project forms part of a broader programme to maintain and enhance the city’s transport infrastructure, improving safety and accessibility for all road users.

The Challenge
The surface of the existing cycle path had deteriorated significantly over time, with wear and weathering leading to reduced grip and an increased risk of slips for both cyclists and pedestrians. The ageing surface no longer met the required safety standards for shared routes, particularly under wet or inclement conditions. Restoring both the surface condition and visual definition of the path was essential to support safe, active travel across the city.

The Solution
To address these issues, Jointline installed a resin-bonded, high-friction surfacing system across the route. This robust and durable solution significantly enhances grip, reducing the risk of skidding and falls, even in adverse weather. The surface was applied using carefully controlled techniques to ensure longevity and uniformity.

In addition to improving performance, the scheme incorporated a bold red finish, which delivers both aesthetic and safety benefits. The coloured surfacing provides a clear visual cue, increasing the visibility of the cycle path and helping to delineate it as a shared space for cyclists and pedestrians. Works were completed in close collaboration with Amey and with consideration for local residents and path users to minimise disruption.
