Delivering Excellence for the Red Arrows at RAF Waddington

Introduction
Jointline collaborated with VIVO Defence Services on a landmark project at RAF Waddington, providing specialist airfield marking and concrete repair services for the Red Arrows. With operations based just a short distance from the airbase, Jointline’s Lincolnshire depot was ideally positioned to support the scheme. The project delivered a newly designed flightline layout to support the operational efficiency and safety of the world-renowned aerobatic team.

The Challenge
The project involved preparing the airfield for the Red Arrows' transition into RAF Waddington, replacing former E-3 Sentry markings with a layout tailored to the specific requirements of the Red Arrows Aerobatic Team (RAFAT). The works had to be undertaken on a live operational area, with the Red Arrows continuing to conduct engine testing and display practice sorties throughout the programme. Precision, timing and safety were paramount, with a requirement for seamless coordination between Jointline, VIVO Defence Services and RAF personnel.

The Solution
Jointline’s team, led by Operations Manager Scott Dunham, developed a methodology that minimised disruption to Red Arrows’ operations. The works commenced with hydroblasting to remove 400 square metres of obsolete E-3 Sentry lines. The surface was then prepared for new marking works.

Over the course of four days, Jointline installed approximately 1,500 linear metres of specialist markings, including:

The works were delivered by Jointline’s highly experienced airfield lining crew, including the father-and-son team of Colin and Scott Dunham, whose combined expertise in airfield marking spans over six decades.

The Benefits
The completed scheme provides a modern, safe and efficient flightline for up to 11 Red Arrows aircraft to operate simultaneously, alongside associated equipment. The new layout enables seamless integration of pilots, engineers and logisticians at RAF Waddington, enhancing both operational safety and day-to-day efficiency.

Squadron Leader Andy King, the Red Arrows’ Senior Engineering Officer, commented:
"The newly-designed flightline is a huge milestone for the Red Arrows’ integration into RAF Waddington. The delivered flightline looks excellent and the speed and professionalism that the project was delivered with also represents excellence, as well as highlighting the cohesive relationship between the Red Arrows, RAF Waddington and VIVO."
