Delivering a Self-Binding Gravel Towpath Beside a Live Canal in Yorkshire

Introduction

Jointline was appointed by JN Bentley, working on behalf of the Canal & River Trust, to construct 1.8km of unbound self-binding gravel towpath between Kildwick and Silsden. The project required exacting specification compliance within a live, environmentally sensitive canal-side setting. The team maintained public access throughout, working closely with stakeholders to ensure quality, safety, and minimal disruption.

The Challenge

The project location posed several logistical and environmental challenges. Constructing a footpath adjacent to a functioning canal demanded robust safety measures and a phased approach to maintain user access. The surrounding area required ecological sensitivity, necessitating strict environmental controls and stakeholder coordination. Additionally, the towpath specifications required precise execution, including defined width, camber, and layer depths across the full route.

The Solution

Jointline implemented a GPS-controlled setting-out process, with daily engineering checks on width (2.0m), camber (2%), and material layer depths. The build involved a 150mm compacted Type 1 sub-base, overlaid with a 20mm compacted self-binding gravel surface. Material samples were tested and certified prior to installation.

To prevent contamination and ensure integrity, the towpath was constructed in 50–100m sections using a continuous excavation and surfacing method. Timber edge boards and lightweight barriers supported edge retention and segregated pedestrians from machinery. Tracked excavators and pedestrian rollers were employed to minimise ground disturbance. Strict health and safety measures ensured safe public access throughout construction.

The Benefits

The completed towpath was delivered on time and within budget, with no reported defects at handover. Post-completion inspections confirmed a high-quality, durable finish. The improved surface enhances accessibility for walkers and cyclists, promoting active travel and leisure use.
